Abstract

1396216 Surface hardening of aluminium alloys METAL LEVE-SA-INDUSTRIA E COMERCIO 3 May 1973 [4 May 1972] 21035/73 Headings C7A and C7U The surface hardness of an aluminium alloy containing by weight:- 0À2 to 30% silicon 0À2 to 5À6% copper 0À2 to 6À0% nickel 0À2 to 5À0% magnesium and optionally up to 1À0% iron up to 0À2% titanium up to 1À5% manganese up to 2À0% zinc up to 0À7% chromium the balance being aluminium, is increased to levels between 250 kg/sq.mm and 1,400 kg/sq.mm (vickers) by treatment with a cyanide bath at 450‹ to 550‹C. The bath generally contains potassium or sodium cyanide together with boron oxide or a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate, preferred treatment times are 8 to 12 hours. It is stated that the hardening is caused by the formation of hard particle layers of elemental Si and/or Ni 3 Al and an outer layer of MgAl 2 O 4 .
