Abstract
1396140 Sampling molten metal SOC LORRAINE DE DECOLLETAGE ET DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES 9 Nov 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 51817/72 Heading F4B A device for removing a sample from a bath of molten metal comprises a tubular envelope 4 of dehydrated cardboard enclosing at the end parallel sampling tubes 10 and 11, tube 10 having a flat mould 6 attached to its inner end, a refractory mass 12 enclosing both tubes and bounded by a cardboard layer 13, and cupshaped caps 15, 16 and 17 covering the open ends of the sampling tubes. The capacity of the mould 6 is about 8 cm.<SP>3</SP> and the diameter of tube 10 is about 6 mm., that of tube 11 being about 4 mm. The inner end of tube 11 is closed by a piece of metallic wire 22 of about 3 mm. diameter causing the molten metal contacting it to solidify. The caps 15-17 are made of sheet steel, the outer cap 17 melting on contact with the molten metal, e.g. steel. The latter melts a piece of aluminium 20 covering a hole in cap 16 and molten metal enters a mixing chamber 19 through a hole 18 in the inner cap 15. The total sampling time is about 10 sees.
