Abstract

1395635 Measuring capacitance WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 25 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 29782/72 Heading G1U The capacitance of a capacitor 6, Fig.1, under test is measured by the following steps:- (a) first, a switch 2 is closed to charge the capacitor 6 to a reference potential V, (b) second, the switch 2 is opened and a switch 3 is closed so that the charge on the capacitor 6 flows into an integrator 4, and (c) third, the output voltage from the integrator, which voltage varies directly with the capacitance of the capacitor 6, is sampled, held, and displayed 5. A suitable control circuit Fig.4 (not shown) is described in which during the charging phase the charged state of the capacitor 6 is detected by monitoring the voltage across a resistor (14) in series with the switch 2, and during the discharge phase the discharged state of the capacitor 6 is detected by monitoring the voltage across a resistor (16) in series with the switch 3. The arrangement is said to be particularly useful when testing paper carrying a dielectric layer for electrostatic printing.
