Abstract
1,149,635. Measuring charge/mass ratio. SCM CORP. April 6, 1966 [April 13, 1965 (2)], No. 15466/66. Heading G1U. [Also in Division G2] The charge/massratio of electro-photographic toners is determined by placing the toner 26 on a screen 13 connected to a rim 14 and thence to a high voltage supply. The screen 13 is spaced from an electrode 11 bearing an aluminium foil 25 connected in series to conventional electrometer circuit 16, which has a capacitor C in parallel with its input. The output of the electrometer is connected to the phased inputs A and B of an oscilloscope 22. In use, high D.C. is applied to the empty screen 13 with the switch 17 grounded, and then the switch position is changed and the voltage across C noted. The toner powder is then wiped across the screen 13 and the increase in voltage (#V) shown on the oscilloscope is noted. The weight of powder (M) falling on the foil 25 is determined. The charge mass ratio is then given by C#V/M.
