Abstract
1395584 Measuring the mass rate of flow EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 47354/72 Heading G1A In a device for measuring the mass rate of flow of particulate solids 5 e.g. aggregates of pigmentary titanium dioxide which are arranged to fall under the action of gravity so that they form a "sheet" of moving material, a gamma ray source 6 (Americium 241) and a detector 9 are positioned on each side of the moving "sheet" so that the gamma rays pass horizontally through the sheet from one edge to the other (i.e. in an edgewise direction parallel to the face of the "sheet"). The output of the detector 9 may be used to control the rate of flow of the particulate material by controlling the speed of rotation of a set of helical screw feeders Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) or a star valve Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) which serve(s) to deliver the material to where it falls under gravity through a chute forming the "sheet". Several examples with measurements are disclosed.
