Abstract

1431905 Automatic control of bulk flow NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 13 April 1973 [19 April 1972] 18127/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division Gl ] The invention relates to optimizing the rate of feed of mixed objects e.g. potatoes and stones, to a sorting machine (such as that described in Specification 984232), responsive to their effect on a radiation beam. As shown schematically Fig. 3, the prior sorter comprises a feed conveyer-belt 11 from which material falls through a radiation beam directed on to a plurality of detectors 19, controlling deflectors according to the absorption of the object. According to this invention the detector outputs are also applied to a counter 29, through a comparator 27 with a threshold reference 28, so that a total count of all objects (potatoes and stones) is obtained. Since one object may obscure two detectors this count represents the cross-sectional (projected area) feed density rather than the number of objects. The count per unit time, may be displayed or compared at 32 with an optimum reference 33 to control the supply to the feed-conveyer 11 as by varying the speed-governor on the harvestortractor. Details: (i) the system may operate by reflection instead of absorption (ii) the detector units may comprise a calcium tungstate luminophore and cooperating photo-electrons multiplier).
