Abstract

1395405 Sailing vessels KORTENBACH & RAUH KG 13 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 57589/72 Heading B7V The mast of a catamaran can pivot laterally against the action of a spring when the lateral wind force on the sails exceeds a given value. The risk of capsizing is thus reduced. As illustrated, a spring 22, formed of rubber cords, acts via wires 18 and 19 on pulleys 21 at the bottom of port and starboard shrouds 10 and 11. When the mast is vertical, the ends of the spring lie against stops 24 in which circumstance it is prestressed so that the mast behaves as a rigidly supported mast when the wind force is below a value corresponding to the degree of prestressing. The mast may be buoyant, for example it may carry a float 25, whereby in the event of the vessel overturning, if the lowermost shroud (when the vessel is overturned) is shortened and the uppermost shroud lengthened, the resulting change in angle of the mast relatively to the hull results in the hull being moved into a position in which the vessel can right itself.
