Abstract

1395402 Diapers SCOTT PAPER CO 17 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 33290/72 Heading A5R A baby's diaper comprises an absorbent batt 12 of cellulosic fibres between facing and backing layers (14) (16), the batt having predetermined regions 32, 34, 36 of differing fibre weight per unit area of batt and having embossed surface depressions 38, 40, 42, the region 36 of greatest fibre weight per unit area of batt having a percentage (e.g. 6%) of area occupied by depressions which is lower than that (e.g. 13%-20%) of the remainder of the batt. A batt for use in a girls' diaper has a centre region 36 of greater fibre weight per unit area. The centre region 36 is embossed with circular depressions 42 and the end regions 32, 34 have interacting longitudinal and transverse channels 38, 40, the longitudinal channels extending a short distance over the centre region. The facing and backing layers (14), (16) are fluid pervious and embossed and the backing layer may be covered with a substituted by a fluid impervious plastics layer. The ends of the facing and backing layers extend beyond the batt and are folded over for receiving pins. A main batt (12a) (Figures 4 to 7 not shown) for a boy's diaper has the region of greatest weight of fibres per unit area at its forward end, a secondary batt (52) of similar fibre weight per unit area to the other regions being arranged between the cover layers forwardly of the main batt so that it can be folded over the main batt in use. The cover layers comprise mixtures of short fibres, such as wood pulp, and long fibres such as synthetic fibres, the fibres being bonded with adhesive. The batt comprises wood pulp fibres. A machine for making the batts has a main mesh conveyor belt (106) Figure 8 (not shown) covered with a fluid impervious belt (118) Figure 9 (not shown) having cut outs (120) in the shape of the required batts. Vacuum boxes (108, 110, 112) beneath the upper run of the belt (106) are covered, respectively, by masks (122, 124, 126) having air pervious sections and air impervious sections. As the upper run of the belt (106) passes beneath a chamber (103) supplied with fibres in an air stream, fibres are deposited in the cut outs (120), the weight of fibres deposited in each region of the cutouts being determined by the degree of vacuum applied beneath the belt and the arrangement of the pervious and impervious sections of the masks (122, 124, 126) to form batts having the required regions of greater and lesser fibre weight per unit area. After applying the backing layer from a roll to to the formed batts, the batts are removed from the lower run of the belt (106), by a transfer belt (114) having a further vacuum box (148), from which they are fed for applying adhesive and the facing layer in known manner.
