Abstract
1395278 Intra-uterine contraceptive devices JULIUS SCHMID Inc 19 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 8050/73 Heading A5R An intra-uterine contraceptive device 10 of soft plastics comprises a straight stem 12 formed at its lower enlarged end 13 with a hole 14, and at the upper end of said stem with a pair of oppositely disposed arms 30a, 30b each having an upper and lower generally semi-circular section 31a, 32a and 31 b, 32b respectively, the sections being joined by straight portions 33a, 33b respectively. Each arm thus comprises a loop in the form of a generally complete turn, the transverse crosssection of each loop having a maximum dimension of 0.055-0.065 inches and a dimension generally transverse to the direction of maximum dimension of 0.045-0.055 inches. The end of arm 30a which is uniform in its cross-sections terminates in section 32a at its free end, said section not being more than 180‹ of arc from the centre B. Section 32b is similar with the exception that the last 90‹ of arc is of smaller radius than that of the equivalent section 32a, and is provided with a head 36 having a bulbous cap 39, which head and cap prevent the device being drawn into the tubular inserter (22) indicated in Fig. 2 (not shown). The soft plastics arms hereinbefore described are of thin cross-sectional area in order that they may easily conform to the walls of the uterus, as indicated in Fig. 3 (not shown). Although formed of resilient material the arms are stated to have an imperfect retentive memory.
