Abstract

1395207 Heat pipes PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 30 Nov 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 55339/72 Heading F4U A method of closing a heat pipe comprises evacuating a heat pipe of undesirable gases using a vacuum pump 7, introducing a quantity of sodium into the heat pipe, filling or rinsing the pipe several times with hydrogen in either a liquid or gaseous form, sealing the pipe, and removing the hydrogen by diffusion either through the walls of the heat pipe or through a window 2 of material of suitable high permeability for hydrogen. To aid diffusion the temperature of the heat pipe may be raised to increase the pressure of the hydrogen. The window 2 may consist of nickel, an alloy of nickel such as iron-nickel alloy, palladium, or an alloy of palladium such as silver-palladium.
