1394853 Decomposing polymers into liquid and gaseous fuels NIIGATA TEKKOSHO KK 5 May 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 46775/74 Divided out of 1394851 Heading C5E Apparatus for decomposing high polymers into liquid and gaseous fuels comprises an extruder 11 having a rotatable screw shaft 13, heaters 14a, 14b and 14c, a nozzle die 30 and a conduit 55 through which the polymer, after being converted to fluid, is passed into a cylinder 57. The cylinder 57 has a piston 58 which is controlled by a cam 59 which also controls (via a rod 60) a valve 56 (Fig. 2, not shown) so that the valve 56 is opened to allow polymer fluid to enter the cylinder 57 as the piston 58 is withdrawn and thereafter closed so that the decomposition products are expelled, past a non- return valve 61, by the piston on the next stroke. The decomposition products are collected in a reservoir 40 from which liquid products can be siphoned from above the water layer and from which gaseous products are removed for combustion in part at 44 and in part at 47 to drive a gas- or steam-turbine 48 which powers an electric generator 49. In the extruder 11 the polymer is progressively heated to 100-400‹ C. by the heater 14a, to 400-600‹ C. by the heater 14b, and to 600-1000‹ C. by the heater 14c.
