Abstract
1394691 Dolls IDEAL TOY CORP 16 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 47565/72 Heading A6S A doll has a reversible electric motor within its torso to swing one or other of its arms, depending on the direction of drive. The motor also causes the doll's head to turn from side to side, and its torso to rock from side to side on its hips. As shown, a handset 64, Fig 1, contains batteries 68 and a forward-reverse switch 70 connected through a lead 72 and a jackplug to a reversible electric motor 60. In one direction of rotation, the motor 60 drives through pinions 114, 118, Fig 3, and a step-down ratio train 80, Fig 2, to a helical coil friction ratchet clutch 148 in turn driving a disc 150 with an eccentric pin 154 on its upper side. The pin 154 slides in a slot 94 in an extension 92 of a bearing 82 mounted in the right arm 16 of the doll's arm. As the pin 154, &c turns, it acts through the extension 92 to swing the right arm 16 back and forth, about a horizontal axis. The right hand 90 of he doll is shaped to hold a toy vacuum cleaner &c which is moved as in a sweeping operation. The arm 16 and bearing 82 are connected frictionally, so that the angle of the arm on the bearing can be adjusted. If the motor 60 drives in the reverse direction, the ratchet clutch 148 overruns and the right arm 16 does not move. Instead, a step-down ratio drive is obtained through the gearing shown to a gear 160, and thence through another helical coil friction ratchet clutch 170 Fig 2, to a disc 172 having a pin 174 eccentrically mounted on its upper surface. The pin 174 slides in a slot 182, Fig 5, of an insert 108, Fig 2, mounted in the doll's left arm 18 and journalled on a vertical pin 106 in a frame 98 within the torso. As the pin 174, &c turns, the left arm 18 swings from side to side, about the vertical axis of the pivot pin 106. The left hand 190 of the doll is shaped to hold an iron, which is thus pushed from side to side. The insert 108 and the arm 18 are connected frictionally, so that the relative angle of the arm can be adjusted. With the motor 60 running in the opposite, first described direction, the ratchet clutch 170 overruns, and the left arm 18 does not move. The motor 60 drives through gears 114, 118 and the train 80, as described, to a gear 126, Fig 3, fast on a drive shaft 120 journalling other gears of the train. An extension 127 of the gear 126 carries an eccentric pin 128 sliding back and forth in a slot 228 in an arm 226 fast on a shaft 218 journalled in a bearing 220 and secured at its top end to the doll's head 14. Thus whichever direction the motor 60 drives, the head 14 turns from side to side. The drive shaft 120 carries at its lower end a cam 202 sliding in a slot 198 (see also Fig 1) in a frame 28 supported on the doll's legs 22, 24. Holes 36 at the front and back of the frame journal pins 38, Fig 3, in the doll's torso, whidh can thus pivot from side to side, as at the hips. The cam 202 pivots the doll's torso from side to side whichever direction the motor 60 drives. The legs 22, 24 of the doll are held pivotally to the frame 28 by connecting studs 40 surrounded by compression springs 54 biassing 42 against the edges of apertures 44 at the top of each leg. Caps 52 are held between the tops of the legs and the frame. The caps 52 and the frame have cooperating detents so that the legs can be retained in either standing or sitting posture. Reference is made to Specification 1364004.
