Abstract

1394358 Through flow concentration cell STAMICARBON BV 5 Sept 1973 41786/73 Heading G1N The difference in ion concentration between an electrolytic solution and a reference solution is determined using a through flow cell in which the two solutions flow past opposite sides of an ionexchange diaphragm and then into electrical contact with respective identical reference electrodes and wherein the volume of the compartment in which the electrolytic solution contacts the diaphragm is between 1 and 50 mm<SP>3</SP> and the contact time is less than 10 seconds. Preferably the contact time is less than one second, the electrolytic solution is the effluent of an ion-exchange chromatograph and the standard solution has the same constitution as the element. The ion-exchange diaphragm 6 is clamped between two cell halves 4, 5 which define compartments 6, 7 for electrolytic solution and reference solution respectively. The compartment 7 may be considerably larger than 6. The solution flow through the cell from inlets 1 and 2 respectively and thence to identical reference electrodes 14, 15 immersed to the same depth in the respective solution. The potential difference between these electrodes is measured and recorded. The reference electrodes may be calomel with internal salt bridge. The diaphragm may comprise a cation exchange resin when the effluent is from a cation exchange column and an anion exchange resin when an anion exchange column has been used.
