Abstract

1394332 Electric couplings MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 1 March 1973 [2 March 1972] 10087/73 Heading H2E A connector 10 for tapping a continuing first wire comprises a resilient contact 12 having wire-engaging fingers 14; and an insulating body 16, having a U-shaped wire-receiving channel 24 bounded by projecting walls 26 and 27 and traversed by slots 30 for receiving the contact fingers 14 when pressed into engagement with the wire. A retaining wall hinged at 36 to the projecting wall 26 is pivotable to close the channel 24 after insertion of the wire, and is latched to the wall 27 by a lip 51 of the wall 34 engaging a hook 49 of the wall 27. A projection 39 of the wall 34 presses the first wire into position for engagement of the contact 12 and acts as a guide for the fingers 14. Preferably a cover 38, attached to the retaining wall 34 by a second hinge 40, can be closed over the whole surface 23 of the body 16 after engagement of the contact 12 and latched by a hook 42 engaging a lip 43 of the body 16. The hinges 36 and 40 are each formed by a V- groove 45 defining a thin flexible hinge section 46. A cavity 18 for receiving the end of a second wire extends from an opening 20 at one end of the body 16 to an opposite wall 21 and is tapered towards the wall 21 to afford a friction grip to the second wire during assembly. An opening 22 in the cavity allows visual inspection during and after engagement of the contact 12.
