Abstract

1,214,316. Two part couplings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 Feb., 1969 [3 Nov., 1967; 6 March, 1968], Nos. 50146/67 and 10792/68. Heading H2E. An electric connector for making a connection to at least one conductor in a tape cable 28 comprises a contact carrying member 12 pivoted at 14 to a cable holding member 11 which resiliently supports the cable by virtue of a spring means (24, Fig. 2, not shown). The member 12 carries one or more contact members 16 which may be spaced and embedded in insulating material, e.g. polyethylene or polystyrene. Each contact member includes one or more teeth 18 which, with their cutting edges (19, Fig. 2, not shown) formed between curved and straight faces thereof plough into the insulation of the tape cable to make a resilient scraping contact on the cable-conductor, when the members 11 and 12 are pivotally closed. The said spring means while allowing the said contact to be made deflects just to the desired extent to take care of the manufacturing tolerance of the assembly, e.g. 4/10 mm. The outwardly extending portions of the contact members 16 may be adapted to be inserted into a suitable socket for tap-off connections. The assembly of members 11, 12 may comprise a housing 25 and gasket means all of which may be fastened by securing means 29A. A second embodiment (partly shown in Fig. 9) comprises parts 40 and 42 pivotally engaged at 44 and has a cantilever resilient member 58 for the spring means. The parts 40, 42 may be detached temporarily to accommodate a continuous tape cable running through the connector if it is desired to provide a tapping connection to a cable with inaccessible ends.
