Buffers.-Spring buffers of the type described iu Specification 18636/10 for railway vehicles have the pipe plunger formed of sheet metal stampings welded together, the abutting edges being machined true before welding. The buffer head 1, Fig. 1, is provided with a flange 10 fitting into the full diameter of the hollow plunger 3. The casing 4 is made of . two pressings riveted together, and the plunger 3 is also made of two pressings, the meeting edges of which are machined and welded together. The plunger 3 and flange 10 may be riveted as shown in Fig. 1, or the plunger may be flanged outwards and riveted to the buffer head as shown in Fig. 3. The plunger may be provided with a stem 2 which may carry an abutment 14 for the spring 5. In a modification, Fig. 5, the spring abutment is provided at the inner end of the plunger 3, and consists of a flange 8 backed by a stiffening-plate 16. The rod 17 is employed to hold the spring in its initial compression. In another modification, the spring abuts on a reinforcing plate riveted to the rear side of the flange 8, this plate being of larger .diameter than the plunger and working in an enlargement of the casing 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the spring abutment 22 is formed as a recess, and a portion 24 of enlarged diameter abuts against the shoulder 21.
