Abstract

1393389 Boring earth &c RUSTON-BUCYRUS LTD 17 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 38369/72 Heading E1F A drilling rig has a transfer mechanism for simultaneously transporting a drill-pipe segment and a surrounding casing segment from a horizontal storage position to a vertical ready station beside the drilling rig mast (2), Figure 1 (not shown), and subsequently to a drilling position wherein the drill-casing segment is connected to a drive unit (88) (see Specification 1393388). Drill-casing segments are stored on a three-tiered rack 4, Figure 3, and each tier is formed by a fixed bracket 6 and a rocker arm 7 operable by a hydraulic ram 10 to tilt and discharge a single drillcasing segment onto a pair of carriages 16, (15). The carriages are mounted for movement to place the selected drill-casing segment in a pick position where a transfer arm 34, Figure 4, is able to grasp the drill-casing segment and hoist it to the vertical ready position. The transfer arm is pivotally mounted on the rig and comprises a pedestal section 35, a body section 36 rotatably mounted on the pedestal section, a cap section 37 rotatably connected to the body section, a lower mandible 43 connected to the body section and operable to grasp an end of the drill segment which protrudes from the casing segment. The drillcasing segment is swung into the drilling position by means of a hydraulic motor 68, and when in the drilling position the mandible 43 is swung clear by rotation of the cap section 37 following attachment of the drill pipe segment to the drive unit, and then the body section 36 is rotated to swing clear the lower mandible 43 following attachment of the casing segment to the drive unit. For the removal of drill-pipe segments from a well the procedure is reversed, the carriages (15), 16 being provided with load rams 32 to lift the segment upwardly onto an adjacent tier.
