Abstract
1391558 Honeycomb panel BOEING CO 21 Dec 1972 [23 March 1972] 59285/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B7] A honeycomb structural panel, particularly such as shown in Fig. 2 for use in the trailing edge section of a helicopter rotor blade, has a honeycomb core 16 provided with a skin panel 22, a layer of water-impervious, cured elastomer 28 being interposed between the core and skin and secured to them by a bonding means 24, the bonding means being secured to the cured layer and core during curing of the structural panel and forming fillets at the layer-core interface. The elastomeric layer may extend beyond the skin panel and about an edge of the core, and may extend between the core and skin panel either over the entire area of the skin panel or only in the region of a peripheral portion of the panel. In the former case, the sheet of elastomer is usually thicker adjacent the edges of the skin panel than at locations displaced from the edge. The elastomer may be polyisoprene or nitrile-butadiene rubber. The bonding means may be a foamed epoxy resin, particularly an acrylonitrile-modified epoxy, and may be coated on both sides of the elastomeric sheet prior to bonding. The assembled panel is cured by heating.
