1390851 Esters of N,N-dihydroxyalkyl-N<SP>1</SP>- phenyl-p-phenylene diamine HOOKER CHEMICAL & PLASTICS CORP 20 June 1972 [21 June 1971] 28762/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises compounds of formula in which X and Y are integers from 1-12, Z is NH4; H; alkali metal; C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 1 -C 6 hydroxyalkyl; R is ethylene, 1,2-propylene, 1,2-butylene, 2,3-butylene or styrylene; and R<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted divalent aliphatic or carbocyclic radical having up to three carbocyclic rings, preferably arylene, alkylene, alkenylene, cycloalkenylene or cycloalkylene containing from 2-24 carbon atoms in the nucleus, substituents being -CO 2 H, halogen or C 1 -C 6 alkyl. The compounds are prepared by reaction of p-amino diphenylamine with an alkylene amide, e.g. ethylene oxide, in a molar ratio of at least 1 : 2 followed by reaction of the product with an appropriate acid anhydride. N,N - Dihydroxyethyl - N<SP>1</SP> - phenyl - p - phenylenediamine, N,N - dihydroxypropyl - N<SP>1</SP>- phenyl - p - phenylenediamine and N,N - dihydroxypropoxypropyl - N<SP>1</SP> - phenyl - p - phenylenediamine are prepared by reaction of paraamino-diphenylamine with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide respectively. The compounds of Formula I are stabilizers against atmospheric oxidation for use in oxidizable organic substances containing carbon to carbon unsaturation.
