Abstract
1390844 Mixed metal carbides READING ALLOYS Inc 25 May 1972 [26 May 1971] 24603/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A mixed carbide is prepared by compacting a powder mixture of carbon, at least one oxide of vanadium and/or niobium, and at least one oxide of iron and/or manganese, and sintering under reducing atmosphere at 1200-1400‹ C., the relationship between the components being such that the product has a composition lying within area PQRS on the ternary composition diagram. In alternative embodiments, a residue obtained from TiCl 4 production and containing V 2 O 5 and Nb 2 O 5 as impurity is used as the oxide source; and ores containing the required oxides can also be used.
