Abstract
1390793 Oligomers of terephthalic acid and propylene, dipropylene or neopentyl glycol IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Sept 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 44141/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises oligomers of the structure wherein A is a fully esterified propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol or neopentyl glycol group and B is a half esterified propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol or neopentyl glycol group. The oligomers may be prepared by reacting one or more of the respective glycols with terephthalic acid under esterification conditions, the glycol to terephthalic acid mole ratio being greater than 1, preferably 1.5 to 5 : 1, and preferably at a temperature in the range 200‹ to 300‹ C. The pressure under which the process is conducted is preferably sufficient to maintain the boiling point of the glycol in excess of 220‹ C. and may be the autogenous pressure of the reactants or the pressure of an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon.
