Abstract

1389478 Tere- and iso-phthalic acids and monomethyl esters DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 29 June 1972 [2 July 1971 (3)] 30622/72 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or the monomethyl ester of each of those acids comprises oxidizing pxylene, m-xylene, the methyl ester of either p-toluic acid or m-toluic acid respectively with a gas comprising oxygen in a liquid reaction mixture comprising acetic acid and one or more alkali metal acetates, the reaction medium having a cobalt- and bromine-containing catalyst dissolved and/or dispersed therein whereby the desired tere- or isophthalic acid or monomethyl ester-is formed. In examples potassium and sodium acetates, separately or together are employed with cobalt bromide, above or together with manganese bromide, or cobalt acetate with potassium or ammonium bromide as catalysts. Reactors of V4A steel or titanium are used.
