Aliphatic dicarboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing a cycloalkanone with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a solvent comprising aliphatic monocarboxylio acid and ester in the presence of a transition metal compound soluble in the solvent. The oxidation of cyclohexanone to adipic acid, cyclooctanone to suberic acid and cyclododecanone to dodecanoic acid is mentioned with compounds of cobalt, manganese, chromium, vanadium, iron and copper particularly acetates, propionates, butyrates and acetylacetonates. An example describes the preparation of adipic acid using a cobalt acetate tetrahydrate catalyst in glacial acetic acid and ethyl acetate.
