Abstract

1,188,928. Phthalic acids. E.I. DU FONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 24 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 9792/69. Heading C2C. Isophthalic and terephthalic acid optionally substituted are prepared by oxidizing at least one methyl-substituted benzene selected from m- and p-xylene and m- and p-tolualdehyde, each of which may be optionally substituted by, e.g., chlorine or fluorine atoms or carbomethoxy groups in solution in one or more aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, e.g. acetic acid and in the presence of a cobalt-containing catalyst, e.g. cobalt acetate tetrahydrate, the reaction mixture being contacted under ambient atmospheric pressure with substantially pure molecular oxygen for at least five days while agitating the reaction mixture and maintaining its temperature at from 80-105‹ C. 2-chloroterephthalic acid, 4-carbomethoxy isophthalic acid, 3-fluoro-terephthalic acid and 5-carbomethoxy isophthalic acid may be prepared according to the process of the invention.
