Abstract

1389473 Electrically heated garment KOHKOKU CHEMICAL INDUSTRY CO Ltd 1 June 1972 [2 June 1971 20 July 1971 12 Jan 1972] 25575/72 Heading H5H A flexible heated undergarment especially for wearing inside a "wet-suit" comprises one or more panels, e.g. 5, 6 for contact with the human body, each panel having at least one sheet-like resistance heating element 2 with electrical connectors 1 at its ends sandwiched between insulating water-proof sheets 3, 4 sealed at their edges through which connecting wires 7, 9 from the connectors pass, being surrounded by waterproof sealant 11 at their points of exit, the garment having straps 14 for securing it to the wearer and a supply cable 9 for connecting it to a power source. As shown, the garment comprises a front panel 5 formed with a chest protector portion 51 and an abdomen protector portion 52, and a rear panel 6 for heating the back. The heating elements 2 are formed of flexible cloth coated with conductive paint, or flexible cloth formed of glass fibres and nichrome wire. Wires, ribbons or foils 1 sewn to opposite edges of the elements 2 act as supply terminals. The elements 2 are connected in parallel by connecting wires 7. The insulating waterproof sheets 3, 4 are made of rubber, rubber cloth or plastics. The cable 9 connecting wires 7, where they are outside the sealed sheets 3, 4 are enclosed in waterproof pipes 8 and 81 respectively. The pipes 8 pass through waterproof seals 11 in the edges of the panels 5 and 6. Bands 13 joining the panels 5 and 6 and the bands 14 for securing the garment around the body are in the form of cords, strings, ribbons or tapes of flexible material such as rubber cloth, rubber yarn, ordinary knitted or woven cloth. plastics bands or rubber bands. Bands 13 and 14 are secured to the panels 5 and 6 by sewing, adhesion or welding and may be provided with hooks, buttons or other fasteners. A waterproof plug 10 at the end of supply cable fits into a power supply which may be land or sea based or may preferably be in the form of a waterproof battery worn by the user.
