Abstract

1389400 Finishing fabrics KENDALL CO 7 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 00696/74 Heading D1S Apparatus for altering the width and thickness of a fabric 11 comprises a plurality of spaced apart discs 13 each mounted on a rotatable shaft 14 by a swivel means to permit the arcuate movement thereof in a plane about the shaft 14 in a gyroscopic manner, a plurality of flexible protuberances 22 extending radially outwardly from the perimeter of each disc 13, and guiding means 15, 16 to orient the discs 13 in a diverging or converging manner in the direction of fabric feed to stretch or shrink the fabric. As shown, a non-woven fabric 11 is carried by a conveyor 12 onto the rotating discs 13 which are guided to diverge in the direction of fabric feed and is removed by a roller 23 and deposited on a conveyor 24. Each disc 13, Figs. 2 and 3, comprises an inner ring 17 attached to the shaft 14 by a pair of swivel pins 19 and an outer ring 18 fitted onto swivel points 21 on the ring 17. Guide boards 15, 16 formed as combs with teeth 15a, 16a are provided to hold the discs at the desired angle of divergence or convergence. Preferably, the combs 15, 16 are made of a self-lubricating plastics material, e.g. high molecular weight polyethylene, and the flexible protuberances 22 thereon of rubber, rubber-like material, e.g. neoprene, or non-rigid plastics material. Curling of the outer edges of the fabric is prevented by providing the two outer discs 13 on each side with many more protuberances 22 than the other discs. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the flexible protuberances (42) are provided on extension fingers (41) of the rim of each disc. In a modification of the guide comb, Fig. 4, arm-like extensions 33 extending approximately 45‹ to the slots between the teeth 32 are provided to prevent loose pieces of the fabric from falling between the discs.
