Abstract

1389387 Selective printing RCA CORPORATION 21 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 29558/73 Heading B6F A thermographic print head includes an electrically insulating substrate 12 having a first electrically conductive layer 13 providing terminal leads 16, and a common return lead 18, a second insulating layer 28 and upon that a third electrically conducting layer. The third layer may comprise concentric rings 22 each connected by diametrically opposite passages through the second layer 28 to one of the leads 16 and the lead 18. The relative resistances of the first and third layers are chosen so that the third layer act as the heat sources, for providing an impression on a thermographic paper, without the first layer heating sufficiently to cause blurring or insufficiently so as to act as a heat sink to the third layer. The substrate 12 and layer 28 may be of "Pyrex" (Registered Trade Mark) glass. The first layer may be a thin layer of chromium, titanium, hafnium tantalum or alloys thereof overlaid with molybdenum and the third layer of molybdenum. The head is made by sputtering the metal layers and etching them as required and the second layer is also sputtered and etched photolithographically.
