Abstract
1389309 Optical detection of movement ERNST LEITZ GmbH 31 Aug 1972 [6 Sept 1971 8 Dec 1971] 40335/72 Heading H4D [Also in Division G1] In a device for measuring a property of relative movement (one dimensional, Fig. 1, two dimensional, Figs. 2 and 3), between a grating or a periodic optical array and an object, a double image of the object is formed (by a Woolaston prism, the spacing between corresponding image points being equal to the grating constant in Fig. 1) on the grating and the light passing through is received by one (four, Figs. 2, 3) pair of photo-detectors positioned with respect to a polarizing splitter so that each photo-detector receives light from a different one of the images, thus when there is relative movement the photo-detectors can provide signals whose frequency is proportional to the speed and whose phase difference sign indicates the direction of movement. Fig. 3, shows part of an array formed by transparent pyramids 21, 22, 23, 24, for use in a device (Fig. 2, not shown), for investigating two dimensional motion, and depending upon which face of each pyramid the radiation is incident or the radiation may be sent in one of four different directions (only two shown in Fig. 3). The pyramid grating replaces the line grating of Fig. 1, and four pairs of photodetectors are employed in the same fashion as before. The Woolaston prism is arranged so that the direction of the splitting of corresponding image points of the images, is parallel to the bisector of the two preferred directions of the pyramid raster patterns.
