Abstract

1389015 Measuring the level of a liquid in a container; liquid level variation WALTER KIDDE CO Ltd 8 June 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 39753/71 Headings G1A and G1H In a device for determining the level 13 of a liquid in a container 12 such as a fire extinguisher a radio-active source 3 (Caesium 137) and a detector 4 (geiger muller tube) are mounted on opposite arms 2 of a yoke I so that the radiation reaching the detector has passed through the container 12. Thus by moving the yoke up or down the container the liquid level 13 can be detected. The arms of the yoke may be moved by adjustment screw and locking arrangement 14 and the detectors output pulses are fed via an uni-junction transistor Fig.2 (not shown) to an electrolytic integrating capacitor which controls the base of a transistor in one leg of a bridge circuit including a meter. In use the yoke is positioned at the base of the cylinder and a variable resistor is adjusted until there is a low reading on the meter and the yoke is moved up the cylinder till the meter reading changes to a higher reading. The device can be powered by a battery. The device may be attached to the container.
