Abstract
1,087,424. Electro-physical and radiation measurement. SIMMONDS PRECISION PRODUCTS Inc. March 2, 1965 [Oct. 28, 1964], No. 8765/65. Headings G1A and G1N. The volume of a tank (or the ullage space in a liquid fuel tank) is measured by injecting a known mass of gas and measuring its density. The trace gas may be ionized by secondary radiation, or carry radioactive isotopes such as iodine 131 or iridium 192 in oil or water vapour, or finely divided solids (gold 198) in suspension, under zero gravity conditions, and the detector may be an Ohmart cell type. Alternatively a magnetic gas analyzer can be used with paramagnetic oxygen as the trace gas. The fuel may be housed in a bladder in the tank, so that the ullage space remains fixed regardless of the attitude of the tank.
