Converters which are acid-lined for the most part are provided with a basic or neutral lining in the neighbourhood of the tuyeres so as to reduce corrosion resulting from contact with acid lining of basic products formed during the " blow." The materials used include magnesite, dolomite, lime, iron oxide, zirconia, chromite, and bauxite. In one form, the bottom B and lower part of the shell are formed of basic material which is separated from the acid lining A by a layer of neutral material N.
