Abstract

1388508 Refrigerating SIEMENS AG 20 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 58927/72 Headings F4H and F4U [Also in Division H2] A connecting member 4 of a low-temperature electrical conductor 2, e.g. a superconductor, is cooled by immersion in a bath 6 of liquefied gas, e.g. helium, hydrogen or neon and the evaporated coolant is passed by a duct 16 to flowsplitting means 18 formed by passageways bounded by electrically insulating material which passageways are spaced apart by not more than 30 mm. As described the coolant passes through a closed circuit from the bath and splitting means to a refrigerating means 22 for liquefaction and a container 6 for supply to the bath through a pump 32. The passageways may be defined by a lattice-form mesh, by the fibres of a body made of electrically insulating fibrous material, pores of a gas-permeable material, grains of a powder, or a molecular sieve and the ends of the passageways may be covered by filters consisting of glass frits.
