Abstract
1388494 Withdrawing liquids CORNING GLASS WORKS 7 Sept 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 41548/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division B8] An evacuated closed collection tube 22 for use as part of an assembly for drawing fluids eg. blood from the body comprises a hollow body having a bore, one end closed and the other end open and having a sealing closure 39. The closure 39 consists of a malleable thin metal foil (preferably aluminium) cap 40 or a preformed metal cap (Figures 10-12, not shown) having a crown portion 42 and an annular collar portion 44 extending downwardly along but spaced from the collection tube 22 (the central portion of the crown is of reduced thickness to facilitate piercing by a hollow needle). A disc-shaped layer of self-sealing resilient material 55 forms a seal between the open end 25 of the collection tube and the crown portion 42. The seal may be self-adhering or may be fixed to the inner surface of the crown portion 42 by means of a suitable adhesive 56. The seal prevents air escaping into the tube round the cannula during intake of fluid and prevents leakage of liquid after removal of cannula. In order that the closure 39 may be completely impermeable to gas a bulk sealant 58 is placed 'between the outside surface of the tube 22 and the inner surface of the collar 44. In order to facilitate placement of the sealant a skirt portion 52 is formed at the lower edge of the collar 44. The sealant may be adhered to either of the surfaces with which it is in contact or it may just form a compressive seal between these two surfaces, being kept in position by the pressure differential between the inside of the evacuated tube and the surroundings. Figures 6-9 (not shown) illustrate an alternative embodiment wherein the metal cap is formed from a disc of foil and folded into the required shape. The bulk sealant (58) is applied to the metal disc before folding to ensure complete sealing. Other alternative embodiments, Figures 10 and 12 (not shown), have the seal (120) (164) between the crown (116) (158) and the open end of the tube and the bulk sealant (114) (162) combined. In a last embodiment Figure 11 (not shown) the metal cap (128) is shaped to fit the end 24 of the tube and the seal (130). In order to remove the withdrawn body fluids from the collection tube, the metal foil cap is severed with a knife and removed, or a pull-tab (70) Figure 4 (not shown) may be provided. Where a preformed metal cap (Figures 10-12) is provided, this is removed with a known bottle cap lifter.
