Abstract
1345979 Blood sampling apparatus ABBOTT LABORATORIES 12 April 1972 16983/72 Heading A5R A blood collecting assembly comprises a holder (22) which supports a double-ended cannula 21 so that a portion 31 of the cannula is interior to the holder and a portion 29 exterior thereto, and a valve 30 which is located about the interior portion 31 and is movable from a first position in which the cannula opening 37 is vented to atmosphere to provide a blood telltale when the exterior portion of the cannula is inserted in a patients vein and a second position in which the cannula opening is closed off from atmosphere to prevent additional blood from passing out of the opening until blood is to be collected. The valve is formed of transparent self-sealing elastomeric material and is slidable on a hub 27 formed on the end wall 24 of the holder and comprises tubular sections 40, 41 of differing diameters, the section 41 having air vent openings 45, 46. An evacuated container 38 to receive blood is inserted into the holder and has a self-sealing elastomeric closure 39. When vein puncture is made the valve is in its first position as shown. Inward movement of the container moves the valve to its second position in which the valve section 41 seals against the end wall (4) of the holder and a sealing ring 44 formed on the valve seals against the cannula to prevent passage of air or blood. Further inward movement of the container causes the end of the cannula to pierce end wall 43 of the valve to penetrate into closure 39, the valve portion 41 buckling as this occurs. An indication that the end of the cannula has penetrated but not pierced through the closure is provided by the alignment of a ring 48 on the holder with the top of the closure 39. When the container 38 is moved further into the holder the valve portion 41 buckles further and the cannula pierces through the closure to enable flow of blood into the container. When the container 38 is removed from the holder the closure 39 automatically reseals as the cannula is withdrawn, the valve 30 returns to its second position due to its inherent resilience and its end wall 43 reseals itself. A protective sheath is provided for the exterior portion of the cannula and the open end of the holder has a removable cap. Rings 34 on the holder assist gripping thereof and an indicator is formed on the holder to indicate the orientation of the veinpiercing end of the cannula. In a modification air vent holes 45, 46 are replaced by a groove in valve section 41. In a further modification the hub has a projection so that two air passages are provided between the hub and valve. In a further modification the air passage comprises a groove in the hub. In a further embodiment the valve comprises two columns of T-shaped cross-section which are joined at their upper ends to an annular collar which is located on the hub and at their lower ends by arcuate members.
