Abstract
1388364 Centrifugal casting of hollow spheres H HAASE 29 June 1973 [1 July 1972 1 June 1973] 31118/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] A hollow spherical body such as a pressure tank or oil container is moulded by feeding unmixed moulding components into a mould having a substantially spherical mould cavity, rotating the mould simultaneously about at least two axes to mix the components, and then increasing the speed(s) of rotation about the said axes to centrifugally mould the body. The speed(s) can then be increased even further. The moulding material comprises concrete, or polyester resin with sand and a filler. The mould comprises two halves 15, each having a flattened portion 16 for ease of standing. The mould is removably attached by clamps (not further disclosed) to the inner, 3, of concentric rings (1-3). The inner ring 3 is journalled by trunnions 7, 7<SP>1</SP> to the middle ring 2, which is journalled by trunnions 6, 6<SP>1</SP> to the outer ring 1, itself journalled by trunnions 4, 4<SP>1</SP> to supports 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. The middle and outer rings 2, 1 support rotatable, articulated areas 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 12, 121 or endless belts or chains having bevel wheels at their ends. Rotation of the outer ring 1 on trunnions 4, 4<SP>1</SP> by a pulley/chain system 22 driven by a variable speed motor, is transmitted via bevel wheels 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and rotatable arms 10, 10<SP>1</SP> to the middle ring 2. The rotation is in turn transmitted to the inner ring 3 and mould 15 by bevel wheels 13, 23 and rotatable arms 12, 12<SP>1</SP>. The arms 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 12, 12<SP>1</SP> include shear pins to limit their power and are releasably coupled by couplings 14<SP>1</SP>. The rings can be locked together by bolts 17, 18, and include balance weights 19. A steel ring or rubber collar (20) (see Fig. 2, not reproduced), is supported in the mould 15 to define a removable cover for the moulded body. In an alternative embodiment (see Figs. 3, 4, not reproduced), two rings only are used, with the outer rotating at #2 of the speed of the inner.
