Abstract
1,165,251. Moulding polycaprolactam. H. GOLLER, and N. CHATELET, [trading as ANKERWERK GEBR. GOLLER]. 5 Jan., 1967, No. 728/67. Heading B5A. Dimensionally correct ports are moulded from polymerized caprolactam by running caprolactam in two streams mixed with a catalyst and co-catalyst respectively through separate conduits into a blending channel, mixing by a rotating blade, passing the mixture into the mould and allowing it to polymerize under pressure and thereby fill the mould. Caprolactam containing a catalyst and caprolactam containing a co-catalyst (activator) are respectively stored in heated vessels 17, 18. Liquid is run from each vessel through heated metering valves 21, 22 and pipes 15, 16 into the blending channel 4. The two streams are mixed by blade 6 which rotates, either by rotation of piston 5 through motor 7 and gear 8 or by being mounted on a shaft running through hollow pistons 5 (Fig. 2, not shown). The polymerizing mixture runs into mould 3 formed by mould halves 1 and 2 and pressure is then applied to the polymer by means of piston 5, actuated by the admission of fluid through pipe 12 into cavity 14 behind piston 9. To produce an article of the same shape as the mould this pressure is increased as the polymer sets, to force in more polymer as the polymer in the mould shrinks. In alternative embodiments the co-catalyst may be added after the mixing step, the mixing may be carried out with nozzles instead of a blade and the moulds may be equipped with air vents.
