Abstract

1388032 Recirculation of I C engine exhaust CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 29 March 1973 [30 March 1972 20 July 1972] 15133/72 and 34109/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A disc valve 29 controlling exhaust recirculation to the intake manifold 13 is operated by the throttle valve control mechanism 14, 15 through a limited force transmitting connection so that the throttle valve or valves can be operated if rotation of the valve 29 is prevented. In the embodiment shown a lever 46, connected to the spindle 14 of the carburetter throttle valves by a link 50 and lever 51, is coupled to the stainless steel spindle 37 of the valve 29 through a coil spring 47 having arms 48, engaging flats 45 on the spindle. A lever 52 fast on the spindle 37 is operable by a solenoid 55 to close the valve 29 when the engine starter motor is in operation. Holes 30 in the valve 29 register with a slot 27 in the valve seat 23 over an angular range of movement of the spindle 14 from 4 to 60 degrees from the closed throttle valve position. In a further embodiment, Figs.6 and 7 (not shown), the lever (76) connected to the throttle valve spindle is coupled to the recirculation valve spindle (64) through three balls (78) received in holes (77) in the lever and recesses (74a) in the opposing face of a plate (74) fast on the recirculation valve spindle. The lever and balls are biased by a spring (79) against the plate so that the balls may leave the plate recesses when spindle movement is prevented by one of a pair of ears (71) on a plate (70), fast with the recirculation valve spindle, engages a stop (72) on the valve body part 24. The lever (76) and one of the plates (70, 74) may each carry a contact of a switch in the circuit of a visible or audible alarm. The switch is closed when relative movement between the lever and plate occurs. A thermostatic switch in the alarm circuit may be open until the engine or valve has reached its operating temperature. The valve body part 22 may have a passage connected to a conduit (85), Fig.6, connected in series with the engine cooling system. The valve 29 may be formed of ceramic or have a ceramic coating and the valve body 22, 24 may be formed of austenitic iron.
