Abstract

1388029 Applying transfers PICTORIAL PRODUCTIONS Inc 27 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 19596/72 Heading B6C The surface of a ceramic article 12 is decorated with a transfer 2, originally carried by a substrate 4, by means of a deformable member 6, which is flat-surfaced when it picks up the transfer from the substrate but adapts to the shape of the article 12 when it applies the transfer to it. The transfer preferably comprises two film layers with a ceramic colour design layer, possibly formed by multi-colour screen printing, between. The substrate 4 may be of paper coated with a heat-releasable adhesive such as wax and the film layers may themselves have adhesive properties within discrete temperature ranges. Appropriate heating of the transfer, deformable member and ceramic article causes the transfer to be released from the substrate, temporarily adhered to the deformable member and finally released from the deformable member and adhered to the ceramic article. Preferably the deformable member is of rubber, silicone rubber or gelatine, for example a foam rubber body covered with a sheet of silicone rubber, and the two films are of acrylic composition, examples of which are given.
