A retro reflective sign is made by applying a coloured, light transmitting, driable, liquid surface coating composition, e.g. an ink, lacquer, enamel, to selected areas of a surface of a sheet material having specular reflective properties and allowing it to dry, then applying a transparent composition over those areas and coating the areas with small transparent beads which become bonded to the sheet when the transparent composition dries. The beads are then preferably coated with a thin protective film of clear varnish or lacquer. The sheet material may be a metallized film of plastics material, coated on the reverse side with pressure-sensitive adhesive. Coloured, light transmitting or opaque surface coating compositions may be applied to those areas where retro reflective properties are not required. The surface coating compositions may be applied by screen printing.
