Abstract

1387386 Overload protection of transistors INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 10 April 1973 [11 April 1972] 17123/73 Heading H3T [Also in Division H2] A protective arrangement A for a transistorized circuit B comprises a normally non- conducting transistor T1 whose base is connected to a resistor R1 through which flows the supply current to the circuit B, and two gates S1, S2 forming a bi-stable circuit with two outputs, which bi-stable circuit changes its state when the transistor is rendered conducting by the voltage arising across the resistor R1 when a current surge occurs, one bi-stable output disabling the protected circuit B and the other providing an alarm signal. The circuit B may be an amplifier with an input at I and controlling a relay C. The bi-stable circuit may comprise two DTL gates P1, P2 connected so as to cut off the supply to the first transistor of the amplifier in circuit B when the bi-stable circuit changes its state. The output S2 from the gate P2 provides the alarm signal and the gate P1 is connected to the input I so that a short pulse applied to the input may restore the bi-stable circuit to its initial condition and render the amplifier operative. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement in which the amplifier includes a Darling- ton pair and the load is a winding of a cross-bar switch.
