Abstract
1387248 Internal combustion engine starter drives SOC ANON DBA 4 July 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 31884/73 Heading F1K A starter drive for an internal-combustion engine comprises a helically splined shaft 14 adapted to be rotated by a starter motor 15 and a movable portion comprising a sleeve 20 threadedly received on the helical splines 22 of the shaft and connected by a one way clutch 18 to a pinion 12, the movable portion being associated with a friction brake mechanism which comprises a retarding plate 40 in frictional connection with the sleeve and a solenoid 50 of which the plunger core 52 when in its operative position co-operates with the plate by means of a connection including a guide bar 54 slidably received in a slot to prevent rotation of the plate while permitting axial motion of the plate and the plunger core comprises an extension 56 directed radially inwards and co-operating with the plate by means (claw 58) which when the plunger 52 is in its idle position prevents axial motion of the plate while permitting rotation of the plate. The claw 58 and/or a rim 60 have inclined leading edges to facilitate passage of the rim over the claw when the movable portion of the starter drive returns to its inoperative position.
