Abstract

1386912 Electric railway systems WEAN UNITED Inc 4 May 1973 21449/73 Heading B7L [Also in Division E1] The capacity of a single line track for carrying coil cars between an annealing and a cleaning station is increased by branching the ends of the tank so that two cars can be present at the same time at each station, Fig. 1 (not shown). Electricity supply rails are located in pits beneath the track. As illustrated in Fig. 3, cars pass between the single track 14 and one or other of the branch tracks 16, 17 according to the position of two pivotable rail lengths 30, 31 which are moved simultaneously by piston and cylinder units 36, 40. Each car is powered by a motor 51 which draws electricity from supply rail systems 58 and/or 58.1 by means of a mast 52 which carries collector shoes and which projects into the relevant supply pit through a slot 55, 56 or 57. Each supply rail system has three rails, two for current and one for control purposes. The mast has two sets of shoes, one 65, 66, 67 for contacting the system 58 and the other 65.1, 66.1, 67.1 for contacting the system 58.1. In a modification, Figs 6-8 (not shown), the mast has only one set of shoes which engages either a supply rail system in the same position as the system 58 or a supply rail system on the opposite side of the slot 56 to the system 58.1. The two supply rail systems are connected and disconnected by a pivoted jump rail system which is moved in unison with the pivoted rail lengths by a piston and cylinder unit. In another embodiment (not shown), the coil car does not have its own motor and is connected by a mast to a power car which moves along rails on the bottom of the pit. Shoes on the power car contact the supply rail system(s).
