Abstract

1386799 Laminates JOHNSON & JOHNSON 14 Sept 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 48942/71 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and A5] A disposable operating towel comprises a layer of absorbent material having on one surface thereof a backing layer of liquid- and bacteria-impervious material, an edge portion of the backing layer, on the major surface thereof which is not in contact with the layer of absorbent material, being provided with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive by which the towel may be adhered to a substrate. The backing layer may be a water-impervious fabric or a metal, polypropylene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride film and the absorbent material, which may contain antispetics, may be of woven or non-woven fabric, paper, hydrophilic foam, e.g. viscose rayon foam, other foams, e.g. polyurethane, polyether or styrene/butadiene rubber foam, which have been rendered hydrophilic, or suction bonded wood pulp. The pressure sensitive adhesive which may contain antiseptics, may be a polyacrylate or polymethacrylate, e.g. a copolymer of 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate and vinyl acetate. The layer of absorbent material and the backing layer may be coextensive or the backing layer may extend beyond an edge or edges of the absorbent layer. The towel, which may be rectangular, L-shaped or curved, may be sterilized by means of steam and may be hermetically sealed in a package. The pressure sensitive adhesive may be covered with paper coated with a release agent, e.g. a silicone.
