Abstract

1386719 Treated ethylene/acrylic films; laminates GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 11 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 32988/73 Headings B5B and B5N A film formed from a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic and/or methacrylic acid is treated to convert at least a portion of the surface carboxyl groups to salt forms, which preferably contain a cation derived from a Group I, II or III element, ammonia or an organic base. The treatment which is preferably with sodium or potassium hydroxide renders to film more suitable for use in the construction of laminated windscreens. In examples an ethylene/ acrylic acid copolymer is used to form a film which is treated with potassium hydroxide to convert the surface carboxyl groups. The films thus obtained were laminated between two sheets of window glass 3 mm. thick by pressing the sheets at 135‹ and 107‹ C. at a pressure of 14 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>.
