Abstract

1431317 Hydrophilic ethylene copolymers SNAMPROGETTI SpA 30 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 36255/73 Heading C3P Hydrophilic ethylene copolymers having a contact angle of less than 120 degrees may be prepared by reacting sulphuric acid or alkaline potassium permanganate solution with a copolymer of ethylene with a minor proportion of a comonomer having at least two carbon to carbon double bonds, the copolymer containing 0À1 to 20 centres of unsaturation per 1000 carbon atoms of the polymer chain. The polymer may be a copolymer of ethylene with a minor proportion of butadiene. The products are receptive to adhesives, dyes and metals, and in the form of fibrils may be dispersed in water together with cellulose fibrils in the manufacture of paper. In examples ethylene/butadiene copolymers in the forms of films and fibrils are treated with sulphuric acid or alkaline potassium permanganate solution.
