Abstract

1386621 Anti-hunting damping device GLOUCESTER RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON CO Ltd 26 Jan 1972 3771/72 Heading B7L [Also in Division F2] A railway vehicle is provided with a frictional damping device mounted between the bogie and the superstructure to reduce hunting during straight-line travel but to allow relative rotational motion on curves, said damping device comprising an arm 17 connected to the superstructure as by a link 14, an inverted U-shaped bracket 20 fixed on the bogie, friction layers 21 and 22 sandwiching the arm 17 and urged together against the arm by a backing member 18 on a lever 27 which is pivoted to the bogie at 38 and biased by a spring 32, and a roller 40 mounted on the lever 27 and normally located in a rebate in the arm 17, the arrangement being such that on the occurrence of relative longitudinal motion between bogie and superstructure when the vehicle negotiates a curve, the roller 40 leaves the rebate to counteract the spring 32 and thereby release the pressure on the friction members to allow relative motion therebetween. The backing member 18 is carried by a link 25 pivoted on the lever 27 and formed with a saw-tooth end face co-operating with a pawl 30 to allow compensatory adjustment for the wear of the friction layer 21. In an alternative embodiment, a bar attached to or integral with the superstructure engages a friction pad carried by a pivoted block shaped backing member and a portion of the bar defines a curvate recess to receive the roller.
