Abstract

1386529 Razor blades AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 22 May 1973 [22 May 1972] 24458/73 Heading B4B [Also in Division C1] A cutting instrument such as a razor blade 10 is formed of a plurality of axially aligned thin hollow fibres 11 fused together to form an integral assembly, the assembly having at least one cutting surface containing end faces 16 of the fibres which are at a desired angle # to the longitudinal axes thereof. The cutting surfaces of the instrument are coated with a lubricious material of low coefficient of friction such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyhexafluorpropylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene or polyethylene. Such an instrument is produced by severing a fused assembly of fibres to form the required cutting surface. The assembly may be produced by drawing an assembly of larger dimensions. The drawn fibres may have inner cores that can be removed by etching.
