Abstract

The instrument consists of a fixed part and a part in rotary movement axially aligned w.r.t. the first part. The fixed part is pierced by a barrel divided into three sections of different diameters. The dia. of the bottom section is at least equal to that of the fibre to be cut, that of the centre section at least equal to that of the sheath of the fibre, and that of the top section sufficient to ensure introduction of a stuffing-box and a clamp, axially aligned between them w.r.t. the barrel. The dia. of the central shaft of the latter is at least equal to that of the fibre sheath. The stuffing box and clamp operate in conjunction with a second such clamp, to hold the fibre in place. The mobile part comprises a part which drives it in rotation through 360 degrees about the fixed part, an opening in one end cooperating with the fixed part and hollowed out to a cup shape axially aligned with the barrel of the fixed part, of dia. equal to or slightly greater than that of the fibre to be cut. The mobile part also has a barrel perpendicular to the plane of the cup. A diamond point moves inside the cup with a vertical translation. The cutting dia. is rotated completely around the fibre so that the scribe line meets its starting point. Hence on breaking off a clean, flat cut can be achieved making it easier to two clean cut ends to be mated together.
