Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the curvature of the curved face at the end part of an optical fiber to be readily made small by shaping the end part to the specified angle then melting the surface of said end part. CONSTITUTION:The end part 4 of a fiber 1 is polished to a vertical angle theta of 90- 140 deg., preferably 110 deg.. The shape of the end part 4 may leave part of the end face 5 before polishing like (b) or may be tepared to needle form like (c) or may form a surface 6 in the direction rectangular to the length direction of the optical fiber like (d). Next, the surface of the end part 4 of the fiber 1 is melted by using an oxyhydrogen flame and is thereby smoothed to form the vertex part 7 of the end part 4 to a curved face like (e). This method enables the curvature of the curved face at the end part of the optical fiber to be made smaller irrespective of the radius of the fiber.
