Abstract
1386424 Fuel elements UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 22 March 1973 [15 March 1972] 12162/72 Heading G6C A locating grid for a nuclear fuel assembly comprises a plurality of metal strips interconnected to form a plurality of walls arranged to contact each fuel pin at only two circumferentially separated locations which are not diametrically opposite one another, at least two such grids being displaced along the fuel assembly and suitably oriented relative to one another so that lateral movement of each fuel pin as a whole is substantially prevented. As shown, the metal strips 1 are bent at angles of 120 degrees and the compartments 2 each house two or more fuel pins 3 (with the exception of compartments 14, 15 which each house but one fuel pin). At each corner of the hexagonal perimeter of the grid there is located a hexagonal member 8 having a rounded outermost apex and a central hole 9. The walls of each compartment 2 form a regular part-hexagon, two of these walls each including an integral projection 10. The grid is braced either by means of metal strips 11 or by means of triangular metal filling pieces 12. An identical grid is spaced along the fuel pins 3 and displaced relative to the first grid by 180 degrees so that the two grids co-operate to complete, in plan, each hexagon and thereby wholly surround each fuel pin. The pins while being located against bodily lateral movement in any direction, are free to move relative to each individual grid, which movement is accommodated by the pins " snaking " slightly between grids. Although in the embodiment described the compartments are hexagonal, this is not essential and other geometrical figures, such as a square or rhombus, may be used. The compartments may even have curved sides. In an alternative form of the invention, the metal strips are bent and interconnected to form compartments each of which houses only one fuel pin, for example, closed hexagonal compartments such as the compartments 14, 15 in Fig. 1. The pin in each compartment is contacted by a pair of projections on one such grid and by an oppositely located pair of projections on an adjacent displaced and suitably oriented grid.
